WHY can't cats get down from a tree on their own?

A domestic cat's claws are curved on the inside, allowing it to easily climb up tree trunks. However, these claws are not strong enough to support the cat as it descends. If a person does not come to its aid, the cat will either descend headfirst with its tail or jump down.
