WHY does the filament in a light bulb not burn out?

Electric current causes thin metal wire to get so hot that it glows. Despite this, the wire might remain functional for a number of years.

The bulb doesn't contain the necessary amount of oxygen for it to burn, which is the cause. The bulb also contains a gas that extinguishes the blaze.
