WHY do flamingos stand on one leg?

 The unique way that birds stand on one leg is related to heat regulation. Their feet, which are not covered in feathers, can easily become cold, especially in strong wind. To keep their legs warm, birds will tuck them under their feathers and take turns doing so. It requires little effort for a bird to stand on one leg because they have a special physiological mechanism that prevents their supporting leg from bending, allowing it to remain extended without the use of muscle force.
