WHY do pirates wear a black eye patch?

Black eye patches were not just worn by pirates, but also by sailors who needed to frequently go in and out of dark holds. The bright sunlight reflecting off the ocean could be blinding, so they would keep one eye covered in darkness to help them quickly adjust to the changing light levels. When they descended into the hold, they would simply uncover the patched eye and be able to see immediately.
