WHY is chewing gum hard to digest?

Chewing gum is typically made from a combination of rubber or synthetic rubber, sweeteners, and flavorings. While it is true that the base material of chewing gum is not digestible, it is not accurate to say that chewing gum is made entirely of plastic. The base material of chewing gum is typically made from a type of rubber or synthetic rubber, which is a flexible, elastic substance that is derived from natural or synthetic sources.

It is also not accurate to say that the base material of chewing gum passes through the digestive tract unchanged. While it is true that the body is not able to digest chewing gum, the base material is not eliminated from the body "naturally." Instead, it is excreted in the feces. The plant substances in chewing gum, such as additives and flavors, may be partially digested, but the base material is not.

The warning on chewing gum labels that advises against swallowing the gum is included because swallowing large amounts of chewing gum can cause digestive problems. However, it is generally safe to chew gum, as long as it is not swallowed.
