WHY is the water in the sea salty?

As rivers flow and rocks are worn away, a tiny fraction of salt is carried into the vast oceans. And as water evaporates and falls as precipitation, a pinch of salt returns to the sea once more. It's a never-ending cycle that adds just one sixteen millionth of salt to the world's oceans each year.
