WHY are there lines on the palm?

 The lines in the palm of the hand serve to facilitate movement by allowing the skin to stretch and move without resistance over the bones and joints. This allows for effective clenching and unclenching of the fist, grasping and holding of objects, and the ability to perform a variety of hand movements.
