WHY do sharks never sleep?

Some species must continuously swim to maintain water flow through their gills for breathing. Others can rest but stay alert during specific intervals. Usually, sharks can only rest in one place for up to an hour and cannot sleep for extended periods or they will suffocate from lack of oxygen.
