WHY is mercury a liquid?

Most metals we're familiar with are solid at room temperature, but mercury is different. Its melting point is much lower, at -38.83°C, so we usually see it in its liquid form. However, if the temperature drops to -39°C or below, mercury will solidify like any other metal. It's worth noting that mercury also evaporates at room temperature, just like any liquid.
