Why Chandrayaan-3 Landed on the South Pole of the Moon??

Chandrayaan-3 is India’s third mission to the moon. It landed on the moon on August 23, 2023. It was the first time anyone landed near the south pole of the moon. The south pole is the bottom part of the moon. It is very interesting because it has water ice in some places that never gets sunlight. These places are very cold and have some materials that came from the early solar system. These materials are important for life and for future space missions.

Chandrayaan-3 has two parts: a lander and a rover. The lander carries the rover and has four instruments to study the moon’s surface and air. The rover comes out of the lander and has two instruments to measure the chemicals on the moon’s surface. The landing site is a flat area near the south pole that has good light and communication. The rover can move up to 500 m from the lander and talk to it. The lander can talk to Earth through a big antenna or Chandrayaan-2 orbiter, which is another spacecraft around the moon.

Chandrayaan-3 follows Chandrayaan-2, which tried to land near the south pole in 2019 but failed. Chandrayaan-3 wants to show India’s skills in space exploration and learn more about the moon and its water ice.
